Emmanuel Tjeknavorian, an Austrian born in 1995, originally a violinist, has now also made a name in conducting as the Music Director of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano. His performance style is marked by energetic gestures, a clear vision, and narrative sensitivity. The concert opens with Jean Sibelius’s Morte di Mélisande, a piece from a suite inspired by Maeterlinck’s symbolist drama. This work offers a few minutes of suspended, transparent music filled with fatalism and melancholy.
Next, the audience is treated to Franz Joseph Haydn’s Concerto No. 2 in D major for cello and orchestra, composed in the 1780s. This elegant and brilliant piece thrives on the interplay between virtuosity and grace. It is performed by Jeremias Fliedl, a young Austrian cellist renowned for the natural intensity of his phrasing and his attention to timbral quality.
The concert concludes with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 in B‐flat Major Op. 60, composed in 1806 between the Third and Fifth symphonies. This luminous and compact work, while less dramatic, is equally profound, constructed with architectural intelligence and infectious vitality.
